SPECIES CARE GUIDE

Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa)

Use this guide as a starting point for caring for this species at home.

Lighting

Give it moderate to bright indirect light. Variegated forms generally benefit from a brighter spot than solid green plants.

Watering

Water thoroughly, then let roughly the top quarter to third of the mix dry before watering again.

Substrate

Choose an organic-rich potting mix that drains freely.

Humidity

It prefers higher humidity. Use a humidifier if the room is dry.

Temperature

Keep it in a warm room, roughly 60–85°F.

Repotting

Repot in spring if the plant has outgrown its container.

Growth habit

This is a climbing vine. Give it a sturdy support as the stems grow and the leaves get larger.

Propagation

Take a stem cutting that includes a node and growth bud, or propagate by layering.

Pet toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and trouble swallowing. Keep out of reach.
