SPECIES CARE GUIDE

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Use this guide as a starting point for caring for this species at home.

Varieties covered

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) · Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’) · N’Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Njoy’) · Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon’) · Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Jade’) · Snow Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Snow Queen’) · Pearls and Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘UFM12’) · Manjula Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘HANSOTI14’)

Lighting

Bright, indirect light works well for these varieties. Pothos tolerates lower light, but varieties with patterned leaves may lose some of their markings.

Watering

Let the potting mix dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and let the pot drain.

Substrate

Use a freely draining indoor potting mix.

Humidity

If the room is particularly dry, a humidifier can help.

Fertilizing

NC State suggests feeding about every other month during active growth. Skip feeding when growth pauses and follow the fertilizer label.

Growth habit

Let the vines trail or give their aerial roots a support to climb. With support and enough light, new leaves can grow larger.

Propagation

Stem cuttings with a node root readily in water.

Common problems

If the mix stays wet and leaf edges blacken, check drainage and look for root rot. Also watch for mealybugs and scale.

Pet toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and trouble swallowing. Keep out of reach.
